The Secret to Stunning Blondes: The Magic of Glazes, Toners, and Conditioning Treatments

1/31/2024

Achieving and maintaining the perfect blonde shade requires more than just a one-time visit to the salon. Blonding, which requires a chemical lightening process, is a journey. Those who seek the coveted golden locks know that it takes dedication and care to keep their hair looking flawless. One often overlooked but incredibly beneficial practice is coming in for glazes and deep conditioning treatments in-between your blonding appointments. Let’s delve into why incorporating these sessions into your hair care routine is the secret to maintaining vibrant, healthy, and stunning blonde hair.

Preserving Color Brilliance: Blondes are known for their radiant and luminous hair color, but maintaining that brilliance requires attention to detail. Over time, natural elements, styling products, and everyday wear and tear can dull your blonde hue. Glazes act as a protective shield, sealing the hair cuticle and preventing color from fading. By coming in for regular glazes in-between your blonding services, you can extend the life of your color and keep your blonde looking as vibrant as the day you walked out of the salon.

Enhancing Tone and Dimension: During blonding appointments, achieving a specific tone or dimension is an art. Whether you prefer icy platinum, warm honey, or a sun-kissed balayage, glazes can be customized to enhance or neutralize tones, ensuring that your blonde remains true to your desired look. This personalized touch not only maintains the integrity of your color but also allows you to experiment with subtle changes in tone for a fresh and dynamic appearance.

Boosting Hydration and Repair with Deep Conditioning: The chemical lightening process can strip the hair of its natural moisture and leave it prone to dryness and damage. Deep conditioning treatments are essential for replenishing moisture and repairing any damage caused during the lightening process. Regularly incorporating deep conditioning in-between appointments keeps your hair healthy, soft, and more resilient to the effects of styling tools and environmental stressors.

Preventing Brassiness: One common concern for blondes is the dreaded brassiness that can develop over time. Factors like sun exposure, hard water, and the use of certain hair products can contribute to unwanted warm undertones. Color Glazes, also known as toners, with purple or blue undertones can counteract brassiness, helping to maintain a cool and neutral blonde shade. By scheduling glazes in-between your blonding services, you can proactively combat brassiness and enjoy a consistently beautiful and balanced blonde.

Acidic Color Gloss Treatments for Added Shine: In addition to glazes, Redken’s Acidic Color Gloss treatment provides an extra layer of shine and vibrancy to your hair. Acidic Color Gloss provides long-lasting color vibrancy for up to 32 washes and locks in intense molecular-level shine for up to 76% shinier hair. The acidic pH formula with amino acids and vitamin E help seal the cuticle and lock in shine to protect color from fading and dulling that may be caused by water and heat. Including acidic color gloss treatments in your routine ensures that your blonde remains dazzling and radiant.

In the pursuit of perfect blonde hair, it's crucial to recognize the importance of ongoing care and maintenance. Glazes and deep conditioning treatments in-between lightening services are the secret weapons for preserving color brilliance, enhancing tone and dimension, boosting hydration, preventing brassiness, and adding extra shine. By incorporating these practices into your hair care routine, you can ensure that your blonde remains vibrant, healthy, and absolutely stunning. Consult with your Shear Serenity Salon stylist to create a personalized plan that caters to the unique needs of your hair, and watch as your blonde locks continue to turn heads wherever you go.

The Practical Guide to Healthy Locks: Understanding the Importance of Regular Haircuts and Trims

Balayage and Haircut by Kelsey
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, our hair often takes a back seat in terms of attention and care. We shampoo, condition, and style, thinking we've covered all the bases for maintaining a healthy mane. However, there's a crucial aspect that frequently goes overlooked – the significance of regular haircuts and trims.
The irony is that for many, the idea of a haircut is often reserved for specific occasions, like back-to-school preparations or the holiday season. It's as if we've collectively decided that our hair's well-being can be adequately addressed twice a year. But is that enough? Let's break down why relegating haircare to these sporadic moments may not be doing our locks any favors.

Preventing Split Ends: Let's start with the basics – split ends. Whether you have short or long hair, split ends can sneak up on you and compromise the overall health and appearance of your locks. Regular haircuts, ideally every 6-8 weeks, are your first line of defense against these pesky split ends. Trimming removes damaged ends, preventing splits from traveling up the hair shaft and keeping your strands looking fresh and vibrant.

Maintaining Hair Length: The fear of losing length often deters individuals from scheduling regular trims. However, the truth is that a strategic trim can help you maintain your preferred hair length. By selectively removing damaged ends, you keep your locks at the desired length while encouraging healthier growth from the roots. It's a win-win situation that allows you to have both the length you love and healthier hair.

Boosting Hair Texture: Ever wondered why your hair feels smoother and silkier right after a haircut? Regular trims contribute significantly to improving hair texture. By getting rid of split ends and preventing further damage, your hair can grow in a healthier, more uniform manner. The result? A texture that feels softer to the touch and looks more polished overall.

Stimulating Hair Growth: While it's a common misconception that haircuts make your hair grow faster, there's a kernel of truth in the idea. Regular trims create a conducive environment for healthy hair growth. By eliminating damaged ends and maintaining a healthier scalp, you're setting the stage for stronger, more robust hair. So, while it won't make your hair sprout like a weed, it does contribute to a fuller and healthier mane.

Preventing Breakage: Nothing is more disheartening than seeing your hair break off in bits and pieces. Regular trims act as a proactive measure against breakage. Damaged ends are weak points in your hair, and getting rid of them reduces the likelihood of breakage. This means your hair not only stays intact but also retains its strength and resilience.

Maintaining Style and Shape: For those who love to experiment with hairstyles or have layered cuts, regular trims are non-negotiable. Over time, styles lose their shape, and layers can become uneven. Scheduling regular haircuts ensures that your chosen style stays sharp, defined, and flattering. It's the secret to keeping your haircut looking as good as the day you walked out of the salon.

Enhancing Hair Shine: Have you ever noticed how your hair seems to shine brighter after a haircut? That's not just a placebo effect. Healthy hair reflects light better, giving it a natural shine. Regular trims rid your hair of damaged ends, allowing light to bounce off your strands more evenly. The result is hair that looks glossier and more radiant.
In conclusion, the importance of regular haircuts and trims goes far beyond a mere aesthetic touch-up. It's a practical step in maintaining the health and vitality of your locks. From preventing split ends and breakage to stimulating growth and enhancing shine, the benefits are abundant. So, the next time you contemplate delaying that salon appointment, remember that a little trim can go a long way in ensuring your hair stays not only beautiful but also healthy. After all, healthy hair is not just a trend; it's an enduring statement of self-care and well-being!

Name: Kelsey Connelly
Title: Stylist
Company: Shear Serenity Salon
Social: @hairartbykitty

Where are you from, and why did you choose to become a stylist?
I was born and raised in Palisades NY, and was influenced in many ways to become a stylist. For one I grew up around an amazing hairstylist, who just happens to be my sister. Apart from the fact that I was raised around the profession,
I'm very attracted to the artistry and creativity of it all. No where else can you make a living creating art everyday in an open and supportive environment. Being able to make people feel and look beautiful is also a very gratifying experience.

How did you end up working at Shear Serenity?
I ended up working a Shear Serenity through my sister, who graciously gave me a job throughout high school as an assistant. I quickly fell in love with the industry and all of its amazing opportunity and have been doing hair ever since!

What is your biggest accomplishment in your career so far?
My biggest accomplishment in my career was participating in our 10th Anniversary Glam Up and Give Back Hair Showcase. We were given the opportunity to showcase period styles throughout the decades through hair and fashion. Ive never had a more gratifying feeling than to watch a model with your complete vision walk in a full staged runway show. Not to mention that i was able to help raise $10,000 for various 3 sick children & their families.

What is your favorite product right now, and how would you recommend to use it?
My favorite product right now is the "My Secret Blow Out Spray." Not only does it cut your blow dry time in half, but it acts as a heat protectant as well as giving you tons of body and shine.

Do you have an absolute favorite part of your profession?
My absolute favorite part of my profession is be able to create art as my job everyday! We as stylists are artists who are lucky enough to make a living by doing what we love.

What would be typical “you” outside of work? Hobbies, activities, etc.?

I have to think about this one, lol (I literally do nothing)!

Bronde Is The New Blonde

Picture

Shear Serenity Salon is home to Pearl River’s best hair stylists including our Colorist/Stylist Samantha Diliberto who shares pro tips for balayage and getting the bronde (brown – blonde) look for fall.
Sometimes we get lucky enough to color someone with naturally dark hair.  If coloring, do the research to find a stylist that is not only known for being great, but known for his/her knowledge of color and that understands how to work with dark hair and not just blonde. While there are many great colorists out there, many have a specialty, like in medicine. Working with dark hair requires patience and a keen eye for detail, there is more subtlety and nuance in acquiring the right shade for brunette’s going lighter.

If someone is a hair dye virgin and just wants to experiment with “natural” or mild looking color, a glossing service is a perfect intro to color. A gloss is a quick service that is typically applied at the shampoo basin and lasts about a month. It will bring out shine and more dimension in the hair and can add depth and tone if desired.

When having a new client in the chair, we always begin with a nice little dialogue about what is going on in life and the expectations for any changes. That convo really gives me a feel for what we can achieve in the session and what will be the best fit for lifestyle at the given time.

In some cases, we will work on gradually getting the hair light vs. going from dark to light immediately over several appointments. Patience is key. Sometimes it doesn't work to just go “bronde” (brown-blonde) overnight. The integrity of the hair is always most important so I never push the hair past its limits. Giving it time to rest between sessions and proper at home care makes all the difference. The home routine is really where the battle for healthy hair is won or lost.

Things to know; Inevitably, highlighted hair can turn brassy over time. A gloss in the salon is a great quick fix.
Also, color treated hair needs a little more love than virgin, untreated hair. A good rule of thumb is, the more often you color and use heat to style your hair, the often you should use a mask and products. All hair can benefit from heat protection, particularly highlighted hair, and richer shades benefit from UV protection from fading, especially in summer!

Swing by for a consultation and/or recommendations of  the right products for your hair!

Shear Serenity Salon's Glam Up & Give Back Fundraiser

9/20/2017

June 9th 2017 - 10 successful years as a salon, celebrated by giving back!
November 2016 - Owner Samantha is hiring a new salon coordinator. She ends up hiring a native Norwegian girl, Rae. With background as a stylist and competitive dancer in her home country, and experience as marketing assistant for Meatpacking District BID. ...their connection was instant!

Over our first sushi lunch together, the planning of Glam Up & Give Back began. 10 years as a salon was a huge milestone, and it needed to be celebrated. The passion for hair and fashion was definitely a huge part of what we wanted to show at the event. Samantha's big heart for children, family and community was the reason we wanted it to be a fundraiser. We contacted Penguin Plunge, and they were immediately on board. We were going to raise money for three seriously ill children and their families. Gabriella Carney, Noah Diaz and Molly McGovern were the three wonderful children we were more then excited to help!

Over the next few months, we made phone calls, wrote emails, posted on social media and did walk-ins to get donations in the form of money, raffle prizes, clothing for our fashion show, stages, lights, decor, photographer, you name it. We reached out to absolutely everyone we could think of, and was sleeping, eating and breathing the fundraiser!

The day of Glam Up & Give Back, June 9th 2017 - we wouldn't be able to do it without family and friends! Thanks to Shine Events, Heather & Birch Floral Design, Elegant Balloons and A Creative Touch  - Knight's Of Columbus never looked better!
Also the outdoor tent from the Quaranti Family that hosted live band S.R.O, our huge blow up tavern from Tavern On The Lawn that functioned as our scotch and cigar lounge, was making the event extra special!

Looking back, our fashion show dedicated to the decades from 1920's - present day was definitely the highlight of the night. The local models were shining on the runway, and dancers from Nymcheck Dance Studio were dancing to the beats of DJ Steve.

Over 100 prizes were raffled off that night, and we are so proud to say that we raised $10,000 for the three families! Thank you to everyone that came out, donated and made the extra special!

Below you'll find some of the moments captured by photographer Jennifer Hogdahl-Baisley at
Studio Three Photography.
